First Field Trip

I just dropped my preschooler off for his first ever field trip. His class is going to a local pumpkin farm. I couldn’t help but get a little choked up. It seemed like almost every mom had signed up to chaperone except me. Guilt, guilt, guilt! I felt it creep up, instantly. I should have taken off work and found a sitter for my daughter.

Now, I know there will be plenty more field trips and school parties that I can help with. So, I should just let the guilt go. I’m sure he’s having the time of his life riding in that big yellow school bus on the way to the farm… without me. Blahhahahaha!

Oh yes, so been there! I made it to my oldest’s first field trip but haven’t been able to go on any others since… I hate that! Sigh.

Been there done that – mine are now both in school and I STILL had to miss my 3rd graders first field trip. There needs to be a way to get rid of the guilt – cause sista’ I got it!
Great post – thank god I get to go on a field trip next week with daughter – makes me feel like mom of the year….for a day or two.

  3. Thanks, ladies! To top it off I was the very last one to pick my son up after the field trip. He was sitting there all by himself with his teacher. I got there right on time, too. Apparently the bus arrived back at school 10 minutes early. Ugh – I can’t win.

Have fun on your daughter’s field trip, Jamie. I’m so going to be on my son’s next one.

Don’t worry. I couldn’t volunteer for any of Jude’s field trips for preschool. Either work conflicted or I had Lily and couldn’t go.
You will get to later when they are both in school and you have time to take off.

  5. It’s OK. I know how you feel, too, but the thing to remember is he had a good time. It was the first one, which is the hardest. As they get older too, the schools are pretty good at posting all parties and field trips at the being of the year, so you can sign up in advance. I try to make 2 parties/trips for each kid per year, and it usually only involves taking a half day of vac. for each one…..You’ll be there next time!

  6. If it makes you feel any better, my son is going on his first ever field trip this upcoming week too (also to a pumpkin farm). I work part-time and wrestled with whether to tag along on the trip too, but decided not to since I am trying to foster some independence this year – for both of us. I think it is actually a good thing for them to have some expereinces without us (did that sound convincing???)

  7. I’ve just decided to take off work (call in sick, or whatever) to go on my kids’ field trips. I didn’t for the first few years, and after going on one realize that it’s something I just want to/have to do.

But, I have a job where I get lots of days off and sick time… don’t know what I’d do otherwise…
