Tasty News!

Hey, everybody! I’ve got some tasty news to share, but it’s not food-related. We have a couple of special deliveries coming to our house in the next year or so–a new baby, and a new book!

My husband and I are thrilled to be expecting our second child, due in May*. Our 4-year-old is excited, too! And of course I’ll continue to be a WMAG; we couldn’t really afford that second child without the second income!

And then, later that year or the next, my first novel will be published by HarperCollins! Those of you who know me know how hard and long I have worked at this, and now the dream is finally coming true. Here’s the announcement that appeared yesterday in Publisher’s Marketplace:

Sara Bennett-Wealer’s debut RIVAL, in which two high school seniors compete for a prestigious singing scholarship, set against a backdrop of the events that turned them from best friends to rivals, has sold to Erica Sussman at Harper Teen, by Holly Root at Waxman Literary Agency (world).

I’ll post more later about my journey toward publication, for any other aspiring authors out there. But for now, I’m just enjoying what is turning out to be quite a creative year!

*Some of you may have seen the first post I made announcing the pregnancy – in it, I was looking for help selecting a maternity cocktail dress for my husband’s work Christmas party. I took that post down because his company has decided against a lavish party this year, in light of the current economy, which I totally respect. No reason to spend buckets of money on a party when people across the nation are worried about putting food on the table!

  1. Congratulations! That’s awesome news!

  2. Oh my GOSH!! How HUGE! That is awesome, really! Congratulations!

  3. Congrats on your news!

I’ve been reading your blog for several months now and have really gotten a lot of ‘stuff’ out of it.

I have a question though concerning your hubby’s work deciding to cancel their holiday party – will the money they were going to put towards the party be put to use for those who are “struggling to put food on the table”? If not, I don’t understand why an opportunity for sharing of holiday joys would be foregone.

  4. Hey, Sonja – Thanks for the congrats. I don’t know all of the details, but I do know part of the plan was to put some money back into staff development, which to me sounds like helping staff keep their jobs, which definitely helps us put food on our table. They also are going to distribute funds for smaller holiday get togethers. It is possible to share holiday joys without making people feel as though they need to buy new cocktail dresses, renting out an expensive venue, and partying the night away like it was just any other year. Even if it’s just for appearances, I still respect the decision to tone it down. This just isn’t the time for lavish parties, IMO.

  5. Sara! I’m so happy for you. I know how long and hard you’ve worked on your novel writing!

And interesting about your husband’s work party. I wonder what happened with that post.

  6. Double congratulations!! to you.

that is awesome! Congrats on the baby, the book, and on not having to find a dress or go to a boring work party 🙂

Congratulations on the book. That’s so exciting and you are no doubt inspiring many other by managing this with a job, a preschooler and one on the way. Way to go!

I think canceling the lavish party is a good move. 3 years ago my husband’s company had a huge christmas party, then ran out of money 4 months later and laid everyone off. Looking back we all wonder how much the bosses knew, and what we were really celebrating.

  10. Wow that is such a big deal! Congrats!

  11. Sara – that sounds like they have thought through what they plan to do then with their funds. I just get really irritated with companies that make grand gestures like this for the PR. Glad to hear hubby’s company isn’t like that.

  12. Congrats on that baby, of course…but HUGE CONGRATS on the book deal! After following your story via Tammy for so long, I’m so excited for you! Huge props to you.

  13. Sara, I’m thrilled for you. Those are both amazing accomplishments in their own right — creating life, and creating art. You rock!
