The List Is Out: This Year’s 100 Best Companies to Work for

Working Mother magazine publishes an annual list of 100 Best Companies for working moms. But are they setting the bar high enough? Who should make the list?

Working Mother magazine just announced its annual list of 100 Best Companies that are “leading by example, giving women the programs, choices and support they need to shine at work and at home.” If you want to check for your company (or potential new employers) on the new list, go for it.

But just remember, there’s more to a company that just making a top-whatever list. I’m all for recognizing employers who treat their people right, but there should be some bare minimums to be considered a working mom-friendly company. Paid maternity leave, for one.

  • Solid roster of women in executive positions
  • Promote family-friendly policies and benefits in recruiting process
  • Family-related cues in plain view (breastfeeding room, drawings by children, etc.)
  • Employees reveal aspects of personal lives, including family
  • Encourage flexible work and independence of employees
