The Pro Tennis Mommy Track

I don’t exactly follow tennis (or any sport, for that matter), but even I couldn’t help cheering on fellow working mom Kim Clijsters for winning the U.S. Open this week. (My BFF Andrea, whom I’m visiting this week on vacation, told me about it.)

She was a wild card in the tournament, making a killer comeback after retiring two years ago to start a family. This was only her third tourney since getting back into pro tennis recently.

Here’s what Clijsters told Sports Illustrated about winning the U.S. Open:

“It means the world, and I’m just so glad that I’m able to share it with my husband who wasn’t here a few years ago, and with my whole group who is here. And also sharing it with our daughter, of course, is the greatest thing ever.”

Hells yeah, girl! You rock for showing the world that you don’t have to retreat into mommyhood forever after having kids. You can still kick ass, take names, and be the absolute best in your field. And still be a great mom who loves her fam. Yay!

So sweet and also so inspirational. Right now with my little one I'm still figuring out how to balance everything and whether I still have time for myself at the end of the day so I'm always really inspired to see working moms from all areas making their dreams come true. It CAN be done.

  2. I think we owe it to our kids to succeed on a grand scale if we can. My daughter was a huge inspiration as I worked toward getting a book deal. I wanted to be able to say that I made a dream come true and perhaps be an inspiration for her. Not everybody's mom can be a tennis star, but I think it's great for kids to see that Mommy can be awesome at home and awesome at work, too.
